Welcome to this week’s run down of physical releases shipping from the Kudos warehouse.
Ambient, Field Recordings
Hania Rani returns with a 12’’ EP including some of her favourite performed pieces re-arranged for Gondwana Records, on limited edition clear vinyl. Regno Maggiore is the debut album of Davide Meucci, Turin based artist, who released his first record Astroveliero on Gang of Ducks in 2019.
Brooklyn Pirates: Neighbourhoods in the Sky, 2014-2021 pulls together a clutch of cut-up recordings captured by David on the BPRSM, traversing the dial across raucous soca jams & kompas, through to Grenadian election news, Haitian funeral announcements and ads for Jamaican patty shops & spiritual healers – plus broadcasts from Turkish, and Orthodox & Sephardic Jewish pirate stations to boot.
Funk
Rare Groove Spectrum Vol. 2 by Lance Ferguson is another solid collection of re-works and re-imaginings taking in a broad range of classic tracks, traversing jazz funk rarities, balearic digs, latin groovers and more.
Record Kicks presents Origin of Forms the vibrant debut album by Moscow funk band The Diasonics, a mix of cinematic funk, instrumental hip-hop and soviet psychedelia.
Time is the new single from Daytoner, their first release in three years. Time was one of the first stand out tracks from the LP sessions, an up-tempo funk track with Lucy Richards lyrics focussing on the value of living for today and appreciation of what we have while we are here, a sensation brought into extreme focus for many over the last 2 years!
Soul
Athens of the North bring you 12 tracks from Brief Encounter, one of America’s finest 70s soul bands.
Hailing from Sydney, Australia, prolific producer Cabu has come a long way; from his successful remix work – from Joe Hurtz’s Stay Lost edit to Big Wild’s Empty Room flip – to his consistently catchy original productions, Cabu’s only getting started. He keeps this momentum alive with the EP So Far To Go, his first to be released by Ta-ku & Jakarta Records’ sublabel 823 Records.
Billy Gee and the Whole Shabang provides what we today call ‘Soul-Sockin’-Blue-Eyed Soul’. Both sides are equally great and definitely deserve to be heard by a wider audience.
Perfect Toy present a high quality selection of little known and underrated Soul, AOR and anything in between!
Matasuna‘s latest tidbit takes us back to the South American continent once again – to Venezuela to be exact. The song Zambo by the band La Retreta Mayor, which was released in 1976 on the self-titled LP, is now available as an official reissue and the very first time ever on a 7inch vinyl single! The 45 is complemented by an excellent rework of the American producer & DJ King Most from San Francisco.
In November 2019, eight artists from Kenya, Uganda and the UK spent a week in Nairobi together exploring new tangents in music with soul. The group consisted of Faizal Mostrixx, Hibotep, K15, Karun, Labdi, Lex Amor, Lynda Dawn and Maxwell Owen. As Extra Soul Perception prepare to drop the long awaited full album next year they are releasing two tracks from the album via a 7″ vinyl release that gives a taste of what to expect from the double vinyl LP.
Jazz, Fusion
Zeca do Trombone‘s first album Rota-Mar is well known to deep digging DJs who love its standout funk groover Te Queria.
Following the already classic Wamono A to Z trilogy, 180g presents an exceptional collection of jazz funk / rare groove tunes recorded in the mid-seventies at the Nippon Columbia studios by three giants of Japanese music: arranger Kiyoshi Yamaya, koto legend Toshiko Yonekawa and shakuhachi master Kifu Mitsuhashi.
On Altercat we have the first ever reissue of highly collectable jazz-rock / fusion album from Spanish band Costa Blanca.
Soul Connection by John Patton (one of the most influential and underground Hammond organists of the 1960’s) originally released in 1983 on Nilva Records has now been re-released on what many consider to be the reissue label of these times; Jazz Room Records.
On Zehra, multi-instrumentalist UMUT ÇAĞLAR, former Baba Zula drummer FAHRETTIN AYKUT and the Finnish saxophone player / shakuhachi specialist JONE TAKAMAKI join forces in a stunning improvised live set that blends Free Jazz with East-Asian zen-sounds.
Pop
First Word Records is very pleased to present a brand new full-length album from Sarah Williams White! Emanating from the “hilly fields of Lewisham” in South London, Sarah Williams White is a singer songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer. Her sound is a unique blend of psych-soul, folktronica and experimental synth-pop.
