Jake Mehew – Sage (ATA Records)

Jake Mehew is a Leeds based composer and performer, whose work combines principles of free improvisation with the technological considerations of the avant-garde. Jake uses both acoustic instruments, modular synthesisers and samplers to create rich, meditative soundscapes that envelope audiences within an immersive quadraphonic sound field. Having spent years studying the causation of flow, Jake endeavours to create the conditions for spontaneous and radical composition in his work.

Sage is a modern and contemporary turn on what a spiritual jazz record can be. Jake Mehew has crafted an album that captures the energy present within the performances, many of which were of the moment; one-take improvised recordings, harnessing the idea at it’s inception, rather than at its production.

This exceptional record captures the energy present within the performances, many of which were of the moment; one-take improvised recordings, harnessing the idea at it’s inception, rather than at its production. The unique nature of this recording is apparent in not only its content but also in its production; a combination of electro-acoustic music , jazz and contemporary classical sounds. A one-take improvised recording may not be as polished as a meticulously rehearsed studio recording, but it has a raw, genuine, immediacy that you just can’t get out of a more artificial process.
