Notes:
Originally released in 1964 on the Derby label, the international division of Teddy Reno’s C.G.D. (Compagnia Generale del Disco) Records, this amazing record came about from a meeting in a Milanese nightclub between US vibes master Milt Jackson and Italian Franco Cerri, described by Jackson during one of his Italian tours as one of the most brilliant guitarists he’d ever heard. One night at Enrico Intra’s Derby Club in Milan, one of the leading jazz venues in Italy, Cerri asked Jackson to sing. The reaction in the club from both the audience and the musicians was so overwhelming and positive that Jackson was asked by Intra, one of Italy’s leading jazz musicians and composers, to join his quartet and record some material as lead vocalist. Jackson readily agreed and the result was a collection of covers and original numbers, an attempt to capture the incredible vibe of that night at the Derby Club. The recording session at C.G.D Studios in Milan was also attended by well-known Venetian photojournalist Gian Battista Colombo aka Giancolombo, who was working with United Press Photos and Paris Match. Considered one of the greatest photojournalists in Italy, Giancolombo captured the musicians in their element, looking sharp and sounding cool. Thanks to the generosity of the Archivio Giancolombo in Milan, we have the opportunity to include previously unpublished photos from the recording session.
